Giancarlo Michellone graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the Turin Polytechnic. Thereafter, he commenced his career at FIAT, the Italian leading automobile industry, where he first licensed the Antilock Project, which bought into being the worldwide-known trademark now called ABS - Antilock Braking System. He has been author and co-author of many respective patents, which FIAT licensed to US companies for trading. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois, USA, to lead the transfer of technology related to the implementation of the Antilock system to vehicles in the US market, while leading at the same time the FIAT Auto Component Design Office in Italy. He has then become CEO of Rockwell CVC (a Italy-US jointventure with responsibility for European sites and markets). Being an innovator, he directed the New Product Centre of the newly-founded Centro Ricerche FIAT (FIAT Research & Development Centre), whose aim was launching new business initiatives and to promote research into alternative energy sources, bioconversion, environmental and agricultural engineering. After founding the Innovation Department of FIAT Auto, where he became executive Vice-President, he subsequently moved to several different top management positions, mainly at FIAT Research & Development Centre. He became board member in a number of Administration Boards such as Marelli Autronica, Alfa Lancia Spa, Iveco, Fiat Avio, UTS/Comau, Elasis. Recently he has been chairman at the European Commission’s External Advisory Group: Land Transports and Marine Technologies - DG XII /UE. Since 2007, he is President at AREA Science Park, a major leading scientific park in Italy
